In Memoriam – Rabbi Arnold B. Marans

By Mitchell J. Smilowitz, CPA

The JRB sadly announces the death of our friend, colleague and mentor, Rabbi Arnold B. Marans, on July 12, 2020.

Rabbi Marans was a devoted Trustee of The Joint Retirement Board for Conservative Judaism. He began his tenure on the JRB Board of Trustees in 1993, serving as Chair from 1999-2000. He also served for over a decade as Chair of the JRB’s Investment Review Committee. In this position, Rabbi Marans steered the JRB through the challenges of the Great Recession and led the establishment of new investment offerings including the Stable Value Fund and target date funds.

The outpouring of appreciation from Rabbi Marans’ colleagues on the JRB Board of Trustees speaks to the incredible man he was and the impact he had.

“An absolute Mentsch, a tireless worker, a role model.”

“A gentle and very wise person.”

“A wonderful colleague in all his roles at the JRB, Rabbinical Assembly and Sephardic community.”

“An eternal optimist and a good friend.”

“Rabbi Marans had a mind that was encyclopedic. . . His compassion, generosity, and empathy for others was legendary and to have been touched by him is an honor and privilege that we will all cherish for the remainder of our lives.”

“There are people who continue to illuminate this world long after they have passed from it. Clearly Rabbi Marans was such a person.”

May Rabbi Marans’ memory be an eternal blessing to all of us who were honored and privileged to know and love him. We extend our condolences to Mrs. Marans and the entire Marans Mishpaha. He will be truly missed.

Baruch Dayan HaEmet.
